Small Works

These works function as both studies and complete pieces—places where I follow a material, a new color palette, or a quiet observation. Many are made while traveling or spending time on the water, where working at a smaller scale allows me to create away from the studio. I work in layers of paper, water-based paint and inks, and found materials—whatever I can carry with me. Rooted in the same process as my larger work, they feel like field notes gathered along the way—small records of attention, where something begins, shifts, or quietly resolves.

Field Notes

For years, I’ve been drawn to the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi—an appreciation for the incomplete, the impermanent, and the imperfect. This sensibility informs this body of work: the elegance of Japanese script, asemic graphite markings, the simplicity of hand-crafted rice papers, and the softness of fabric and thread.

Created on 5 × 7 watercolor paper and mounted on cradled wood panels, these pieces can be experienced individually or in thoughtfully composed groupings.
